Chattanooga, a city in southeastern Tennessee, is set along the Tennessee River in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.
Chattanooga is the fourth-largest city in the U.S. state of Tennessee, with a population of 167,674 as of the 2010 census, and an estimated population of 183,095 and an estimated 528,000 in the Metro MSA, as of the last census.
Rotary Club of Chattanooga
Chattanooga was the 103rd Rotary club in the US and in the world. Chattanooga was the 91st American city to welcome Rotary, the 8th in the Southeast, and the 3rd in Tennessee.
The original number of members was 24. 86 members enrolled during the Club’s first eighteen months, through June 30, 1915, were designated as charter members. The original meetings were at the Hotel Patten and between June 24, 1971 and July 1, 1971, Rotary moved to the Read House. As the club grew, space was limited. In 2003, the Club meetings were moved to the Chattanooga Convention Center.
The original reason for founding the club: To help the up-building of Chattanooga and vicinity, to encourage the exchange of business ideas and methods, to promote good fellowship among its members, to teach that happiness is obtained through service to others, to make better citizens and happier individuals.
ROTARY CLUB OF CHATTANOOGA - FACTS:
- In January 2014, our Club celebrated its centennial year.
- The Rotary Club of Chattanooga is the oldest and largest club in District 6780.
- The State of Tennessee chartered the Rotary Club of Chattanooga on January 14, 1914. The charter was received and approved by the club at the Patten Hotel on January 23, 1914 with 24 members attending.
- The Club’s International charter, was issued on March 1, 1914.
- Rotary Club of Chattanooga is the 21st largest club in the world.
- The Club’s membership exceeds 340 business men and women
- The average age of our members is 59.
- Gender of the membership is 70% male and 30% female.
- Our Rotarian's demonstrate their commitment to “Service Above Self” through participation in weekly meetings, the time they volunteer and the support they provide for club projects and activities, both locally and internationally.
